Gabrielle Avancini is a Brazilian photographer based in London. Her work is very personal to her and through her photographs she creates narratives and perspectives that portray aspects of both her subjects' experiences and her own. Her most recent projects, Motherland and Queer Love, focus on communities in her homeland of Brazil and the different challenges they face as a result of who they are and where they are from. An important theme in her work is the examination of topics and issues that she is passionate about. She achieves this through careful consideration of her personal projects throughout their development and curation with a purposeful blend of photographs and accompanying descriptions. Related to this is the idea of empowering the subject in a way that maintains the realism of their situation but elevates their position for the purpose of the piece and message that she hopes to portray. A defiant female gaze pervades these examinations and is the lens that frames them.
